Karishma Tanna Opens Up About Postpartum Depression: “Giving Birth is a Superpower”
The actress shares an honest glimpse into motherhood, emotional changes and the strength it takes to keep going
Actress Karishma Tanna has opened up about the emotional realities of becoming a mother, speaking candidly about postpartum depression and the unexpected changes that can follow childbirth. In a recent conversation with The Times of India, Tanna revealed that although she had mentally prepared herself for the postpartum phase, experiencing it first
and was very different.
Karishma and her husband, Varun Bangera, welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Ved Tanna Bangera, on July 29, 2026. The couple later introduced their son as Ved, a name associated with sacred knowledge, wisdom and light.
“It still hits you, and it’s not in your control”
Before giving birth, Karishma said she had already prepared herself mentally for postpartum changes. She knew that postpartum depression was real and believed she was strong enough to face it. However, she acknowledged that understanding it intellectually does not necessarily make the emotional experience easier.
According to her conversation with The Times of India, the emotional impact can still arrive unexpectedly, even when a mother feels prepared for it. She emphasized that women should not judge themselves or feel guilty for experiencing difficult emotions during this period.
Her message is particularly important because the postpartum period can involve a mixture of physical recovery, hormonal changes, sleep disruption and the enormous responsibility of caring for a newborn.
Crying over the smallest things
Karishma also spoke about how emotional postpartum experiences can become. She described moments when a mother may find herself crying over even the smallest things, while still continuing to care for her baby and move forward.
She connected these emotions to the physical and hormonal changes that accompany childbirth, including recovering from stitches and experiencing dramatic shifts in emotions.
“Giving birth is a superpower”
One of the most striking parts of Karishma's interview was her description of childbirth as a “superpower.” For her, the strength required to bring a child into the world and then continue navigating motherhood represents a profound form of resilience.
She spoke about how becoming a mother has changed her understanding of strength and responsibility. Since Ved's arrival, she has described feeling more emotionally connected and responsible, while also discovering aspects of herself she had not experienced before.
A message to mothers: Don’t put yourself on a guilt trip
Perhaps the most reassuring part of Karishma's message is her advice to women not to judge themselves during postpartum recovery.
She encouraged mothers to avoid putting themselves through a guilt trip over how they feel or how they are coping. Her message is that every mother is navigating a deeply personal experience, and seeking emotional support should not be viewed as a failure.
Karishma's openness also comes at a time when she has been sharing glimpses of her postpartum routine, including her efforts to gradually return to activity while prioritising her mental well-being. In August, she explained that her doctor had advised her to slowly resume walking and that she was trying to refresh her mind and focus on the positive side of motherhood.
