Awarapan 2 Movie Review: 19 Years Later, Shivam Returns with the Same Pain, Love and Intensity
Awarapan Part 2 brings Emraan Hashmi back as Shivam after 19 years. Strong performances, music and nostalgia work in its favour, but a predictable story and uneven pacing hold it back.
Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
Duration: 2 Hours 20 Minutes
Nineteen years after Awarapan created a special place in the hearts of audiences, Emraan Hashmi returns as Shivam. The sequel carries the familiar pain, romance and musical nostalgia of the original, but this time the story moves into the world of human trafficking, crime and action. There are enough emotional moments and strong performances to keep the film engaging, though it doesn't consistently match the depth or impact of the first film.
Story
Shivam Pandit (Emraan Hashmi) now runs an orphanage. When a young girl, Aaliya, is taken away by people pretending to adopt her, Shivam discovers that she has become a victim of a human trafficking racket. An Interpol officer then approaches him for a mission that takes him to Bangkok, where he comes face-to-face with Puran Gabbi. During the mission, Shivam meets Disha (Disha Patani), the daughter of a gangster, who eventually becomes an important part of his journey.
The story brings Shivam's past and emotional wounds back into the picture while adding a new rescue mission. The premise works, but the screenplay remains fairly straightforward. Several developments are predictable and the film doesn't offer enough twists to constantly make you wonder what happens next. The emotional connection is stronger in some portions than others.
Performances
Emraan Hashmi remains the biggest reason to watch the film. He brings the same intensity to Shivam while giving the character a slightly more mature and physically tougher edge. His expressions and body language continue to carry the character's pain effectively. Shabana Azmi makes an impact as Nafisa and adds weight to the darker portions of the story. Disha Patani has good screen presence, though her emotional range feels limited in places. Puran Gabbi is decent but feels slightly underpowered opposite Emraan; a little more menace could have made the conflict stronger. Suvinder Vicky also leaves a mark in his supporting role.
Direction
Nitin Kakkar deserves credit for not simply trying to recreate the first Awarapan. He builds a new story around Shivam while balancing action, romance and emotion. However, the pacing is uneven and certain portions feel stretched. Some emotional scenes work naturally, while others feel slightly overextended. A tighter edit could have made the narrative more engaging.
Technical Aspects
Vishnu Rao's cinematography gives the film a dark and atmospheric look. The Bangkok locations add scale, while the action sequences give the film a contemporary feel. The technical work is solid overall, although some action portions and visual effects could have been sharper. The film looks good without becoming a major visual spectacle.
Music
Music remains an important part of the Awarapan identity, and the sequel understands that. Tracks such as “Ve Junoon,” “Yeh Awarapan,” “Tera Mera Rishta Continues” and “Tere Liye” add emotion and nostalgia to the narrative. The album has its moments, although the impact doesn't quite reach the iconic level of the original soundtrack.
Final Verdict
Awarapan Part 2 works best when it allows Emraan Hashmi to bring Shivam's pain back to the screen. The performances, music and nostalgia make it worthwhile for fans of the original, but the predictable story, uneven pacing and inconsistent emotional impact keep it from becoming a truly memorable sequel.
Shivam is back, the pain is familiar, but the magic of the original remains difficult to recreate.
Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
